Session Notes Part II: To Glove, or Not To Glove? by Chris Worden
How many days did it take you to recover from the last big rip in your hands? Those meat claws of yours dictate a lot of what you do in the gym, and in life, and if you’re unable to put them to their full use on a consistent basis then you’re not getting as much of the training stimulus as you would be able to if you kept them healthy.

Not doing CrossFit is probably the best way to keep from ripping your hands, but you’re not into that idea. So you can do a few things to ensure that then next time chest to bar pull-ups hit the whiteboard you aren’t sluffing skin from your mitts like it’s cool.

The first line of defense is a well manicured set of calluses. You can learn more about that on gymnastics websites, I won’t run on about it here.

The next is keeping your hands dry during the workout, you’ve heard me blather on about that as well, in summary: a light dusting of chalk, don’t put your hands on sweaty parts of your body, wear some sweat bands.

Finally, the last line of defense is a pair of gloves. Football gloves work well, and are durable enough. Ideally these are only on during pull-ups or muscle-ups, as they would affect your ability to manipulate a barbell or kettlebell. Further, your goal should be to use them as infrequently as possible, only pulling them from the bag when you’re sure to rip.

So while you may get some crap from the peanut gallery about your mittens you can go home happy knowing that you can train another day, and that you can wash your hair without crying, and that your coworkers will not ostracize you for being a freak with torn hands — they have plenty of other CrossFit related reasons to do so.

The Barbells for Boobs team have been throwing Amazing Grace events for 3 years now. Last year they embarked in a cross country tour, stopping at CrossFit gyms all over the map to promote their message of breast cancer awareness. This year CrossFit Costa Mesa is honored to be picked as the official tour stop in Orange County. We’re kicking the tour off at our gym and we need your support!
